A stunning week of Opera, Music & Song on beautiful Norfolk Island ( the jewel of the Pacific ) 15 - 19th February, 2010

For the past five years, the tiny land mass of Norfolk Island, (8 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide) nestled in the southern Pacific Ocean, has hosted a very unique and quite exclusive Festival of Opera and Music. Nestled in the southern Pacific the island’s size and the fact that flights land only a few times per week, means the number of attendees is limited to a few hundred.
An excellent line-up of singers has been engaged for 2010, including Melbourne-born soprano Jennifer Parish and New Zealand baritone Stewart Cameron (of the renowned OPERATIF! Boutique Opera & Song company), brilliant New Zealand / Tongan tenor, Benjamin Fifita Makisi (recently hand-picked by Dame Kiri te Kanawa to join the great diva in concert ), distinguished concert pianists, husband and wife team, Max Olding and Pamela Page and a delightful trio from the Queensland Pops Orchestra Trio, led by Concert Master, violinist, Julie-Anne O’Reilly.
Norfolk Island, with its spectacular scenery, dramatic coastline and pristine environment has been justly dubbed, ‘the jewel in the Pacific’ and for those who have attended previous musical holidays there, the combination of music and relaxation has been sublime.
Norfolk Island boasts a colourful history, with the famous ‘Mutiny on the Bounty’ providing its modern day roots. A significant percentage of the population are direct descendants of Fletcher Christian and his fellow-mutineers. It makes a fitting setting for the high drama of opera and the thrill of music! During this very special week on the island, Festival visitors, have plenty of opportunities to explore historic convict ruins and the old settlement, either alone or on conducted tours or to savour vista after vista of spectacular scenery to walk and savour.
There are no traffic lights on Norfolk Island and the cows and geese wandering the country-side and roadways always have right of way !
For anyone who enjoys popular opera, classical music and song the Opera in Paradise week offers varied programs of selections from Opera and Operetta, Musicals, Ballads, Light Classics and favourite Movie Themes. There will even be inclusion of some traditional Norfolk Island entertainment at the grand opening event!
